Time to Scale Vaya Tractor!
__Partnerships to feed Africa and grow Agripreneurs.
If you have been on this platform for at least a year, you will remember when I launched a new digital platform called Vaya Tractor! It was the Uberization of tractors Yes, farmers can actually call for a tractor just like you can call for a car ride in the city. It was part of our entrepreneurial discussion about SharedEconomy businesses also known in the USA as the gig economy.
I have told you in the past that when you launch a new business, start small, even if you have lots of money. Try and test the idea in a market you know well. Once you know it works well you can then begin to Scale. This word Scale is something investors and entrepreneurs talk about all the time, and it is part of the language of entrepreneurship.
Investors like to ask, So how will you scale? meaning How do you make it bigger?
We started Vaya Tractor in Zimbabwe last year, and we managed to plough thousands of hectares of land for both big and small farmers. It quickly became one of the most popular services on the Vaya App, which actually has over 17 services. It also became Cashflow positive another Entrepreneurial term.
As the media picked up the service, there was interest in other African countries. This is why you must always have a nice website. Here is the Vaya Africa website www.VayaAfrica.com
Although we got lots of calls, we were careful which markets to pursue first. We decided to pick three countries Togo, Nigeria, and Rwanda. Togo is the first one ready, but we will announce Nigeria shortly.
Partnerships are important
TroTro Tractor is a start-up from Ghana who developed a similar technology to Vaya Tractor. When through this Facebook platform! I heard about them, I connected them to our own team in Zimbabwe.
We worked with the TroTro team to share Tech another entrepreneurial buzzword, and developed a new version of the platform together. We then decided to partner with them in Togo because they are closer.
The TroTro team was very instrumental in the preparations for the launch in Togo and had to be in the ground to setup working remotely with our Vaya technical teams from South Africa and Zimbabwe. I also connected our team to my friends from Tata Group in India, who helped supply tractors as part of the scheme for Togo.
VayaTrotro was launched this week by the President of Togo together with the Minister of ICT and Agriculture. It is a public private partnership with the Togo government, who are very dynamic, and aimed at increasing food production and employment creation through introduction of digital technology solutions in the Agriculture space.
Farmers in Togo will access an interest free government input scheme called Yolim which enables them to access inputs and mechanisation services through the Vaya TroTro platform.
On Sasai Moments, I have posted a little video its in French of course, because Togo is French speaking. Its from an advert currently running on Togo TV.
__Now that you have read this case study as an entrepreneur I want you to sit down and write down the key lessons for you. This is your homework this week.
Next week we are launching Sasai Podcast which will have more lessons for you on how to Scale a business.
