DAY 4
GOD MY SAVIOUR, IS MY HEALER
Matthew 814-17 And when Jesus was come into Peters house, he saw his wifes mother laid, and sick of a fever. 15 And he touched her hand, and the fever left her and she arose, and ministered unto them. 16 When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses.
In yesterdays study, we saw how healing is a sign of salvationredemption emphasizing the fact that God forgives iniquitiessins and heals sicknessdisease.
In the above text, Matthew gave account of how Jesus healed Peters mother-in-law who was sick of a fever Verse 14 after which she arose and ministered unto served them. Following this, they brought unto him many that were possessed with demons, and he cast them out and healed all that were sick.
Matthew, then, explained that this was done that the prophecy of Isaiah Isaiah 534 might be fulfilled. The phrase that it might be fulfilled was employed by Matthew to refer to one eventaction that was in view of or to point to another which was to be accomplishedfulfilled.
For instance
Matthew 121-23 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
The angel stated that his name would be called Jesus that the prophecy of Isaiah 714 might be fulfilled, not that it had been fulfilled yet.
Matthew 214-15 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt 15 And was there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
Joseph and Mary took Jesus into Egypt to preserve him from being killed by Herod that it might be fulfilled out of Egypt have I called my son
Therefore, Matthew wrote of Jesus healing the sick to show what Jesus will accomplish in his sacrifice for sins. In other word, his healing ministry was a pointer to his redemptive sacrifice for sins. This is similar to what was explained in yesterdays study of what Moses, David and Isaiah wrote healing as a sign of Gods redemptionsalvation.
Observe what Luke wrote similarly
Luke 517-25 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee or to say, Rise up and walk? 24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, he said unto the sick of the palsy, I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
Luke recorded that Jesus was preaching with the scribes and Pharisees and stated that the power of the Lord was present to heal them. This was evidenced by the fact that a man with a palsy was brought in through the roof by his friends.
Jesus said to the man thy sins are forgiven thee, however, the scribes and pharisees wondered why he said so by asking who can forgive sins, but God alone?. Jesus perceived the thoughts of their hearts and asked if it was easier to say thy sins be forgiven thee or rise up and walk. He then stated that this was so that they might know that the son of man hath power on the earth to forgive sins. He then said to him that was sick of the palsy Arise, take up your bed and walk and the man was healed.
Hence, Jesus showed that he healed the sick in his earthly ministry to point to what he was to fulfil in his redemptive sacrifice for sins.
Thus, Jesus the saviour is also a the HEALER.
Peter also referred to this when he preached on the day of Pentecost
Acts 222 Ye men of Israel, hear these words Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know
He explained that Jesus was approved by God among them by miracles, signs and wonders. Therefore, his healing ministry is a sign of what he was to fulfil in his death, burial and resurrection.
