When traveling to central Japan, a lot of overseas visitors pass up Ainokura and the villages in Gokayama and instead make a beeline for the popular hamlet of Shirakawago. After all, unless youre coming down from Toyama, these historic locales are a bit out of the way.

Luckily, those with the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass need not worry about this. All you need to do is take one of the Hokuriku Shinkansens up to Shin-Takaoka Station. From there, you can hop on one of the World Heritage Buses.

As any one who has done the route before can attest to, these handy buses will take you to both Gokayama and Shirakawago. This means that you can easily fit both of the two historic towns into a single day without overly complicating your travel logistics.

During my recent stint in the area, I started the day off at Shin-Takaoka Station and made my way down to Gokayama. Thereafter, I was able to reach Shirakawa-go with enough time to get ready for GoldenHour, A.K.A. every photographers favorite time of day.

One of the cool things about the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass is that it affords you access to the bus network that connects Toyama with the limited express trains down near Hida-Takayama.

Thanks to this, you can cut your way all across Japans main island of Honshu for a mere 15,280 yen. If youre planning to check out this section of the country, do yourselves a favor and get the pass!
