The Last Genocide Memorial architecture competition winners revealed!

The Bee Breeders Last Genocide Memorial Competition sought to recognise the atrocities that took place in the Sri Lankan Civil War in which thousands of civilians lost their lives. Run in partnership with the City of Brampton in Canada, Brampton Tamil Association BTA, and Brampton Tamil Seniors Association BTSA, it tasked participants with using architecture as a tool to communicate these tragedies and create a memorial to educate visitors of the terrible events.

Peter Vatkov from the United States won first prize for this Wounded Earth Healing Time project, based on the ancient solar symbol of the sun cross. It consisted of an equilateral cross inside a circle, integrated within the landscape to simultaneously create a fracture in the earth, and to recall the traditions of mound building.

Second prize was awarded to Sizhe Wang, Changqing Ye and Xinyu Zhu from China. Their Generator of Pain and Love proposal was an experiential monument for visitors which displays information regarding the lives of victims, perpetrators and rescuers.

Georgy Fedulov was awarded third prize whose Integrity project was shaped to personify humanity as a whole with elements missing to depict lives of those taken by genocide.

Our Clients Favorite award went to Berina Ramic from Bosnia And Herzegovina, and our student award to Hamid Khalili and Mohammad Mobin Mahdizadeh Kaffash from Azad Sama University of Tehran in Iran.
