HIV IS REAL

HIV is still considered one of the most feared sexually transmitted infections due to inability to get cured after an infection has established, although this information is fast changing as stem cell transplant has been used to cure at least 3 third persons of HIV, a process still in clinical trial phase.
MODES OF TRANSMISSION
Unprotected sex
Sharing of sharps, a practice common among illicit drug users
Needle pricks
Blood transfusion
Anal sex more risky than vaginal sex
Its in your interest to take precautions against these channels of infection.
HIV CANNOT be transmitted through salivakissing, sharing of cooking utensils, toilets or drinking cups, and the discrimination against People Living with HIVAIDS PLWHA is totally unnecessary. Feel free to share the above mentioned items with them.
Apart from having an insignificant amount of the virus, the the antibodies and enzymes in saliva additionally make sure that the virus cannot be transmitted through saliva.
Also, one of the greatest weaknesses of the virus is its inability to survive outside the human host for even 5 seconds. This means that if you were to extract the virus from blood and keep it on the table, 5 seconds is enough for it to die.
Despite having no chances of transmission through kissing, hugging and sharing cups and utensils, the stigmatization against PLWHA has immensely contributed to unwillingness for people to go for voluntary counselling and confidential testing VCCT and not knowing your status means you may keep passing it onto others unknowingly.
While HIV is not yet officially curable, there are both prophylactic and anaphylactic treatments that are very effective.
HIV PROPHYLAXIS
If you are a health worker who is about to perform a procedure that has high chances of exposing you to HIV infected body fluids, you may be advised to stay on Anti Retroviral Therapies ARTs pre-exposure and in the event that you come in contact with the virus, the infection will fail to establish.
HIV ANAPHYLAXIS
If you are performing a procedure or drawing blood and accidentally get needle pricks from a HIV positive patient, or you had unprotected sex or you were having protected sex but the condom got broken --- all these events account for significant chances of being infected.
You are advised to take ARTs within 72 hours after such exposure. The infection will fail to establish as long as you start a 30 day therapy within 72 hours.
However ARTs are not over the counter drugs OTCs and you cant even get them in your regular pharmacies.
If you have had any exposure, you should walk into any Federal Medical Centre FMC and ask for Heart2Heart Department. When you get there, tell them you got exposed. Theyll first do a quick test and if you are negative, theyll give you the drug for free. If you are positive, it means you have been infected long ago and you dont need HIV anaphylaxis. What you need is management and youll be advised accordingly.
You can also go to any primary health centre in your community and get this testing and anaphylaxis done for free.
IT TAKES AT LEAST 3 MONTHS for a HIV infection to test positive this 3 months of testing negative despite being infected is called window period and in a subset of people, the window period is less than 3 months but in every person, 3 months is the maximum time the body needs to make detectable antibodies.
You are taking a risk if you met someone today, had them do the test, and decide to have unprotected intercourse with them because the test result was negative. The reason is, if the person got infected 2 months ago, 1 month ago or just 2 weeks ago, the test will most likely be negative but the person is infact in the most infectious stage and can easily pass it on due to high rate of viral replication during the first few weeks of being infected.
You must therefore always use a condom, or repeat the test after 3 months if your partner is FAITHFUL, to confirm that they are truly negative. Faithful is emphasized because if you do the test today and repeat after 3 months and you cannot be sure if your partner hasnt been exposed within that window period, its absolutely useless to bank on it. They may have had unprotected sex while you are waiting to confirm your second test after the window period.
Unfortunately, this is what most young people do thinking they are taking precaution but unknowingly taking the highest risk as far as HIV is concerned.
REMEMBER, HIV doesnt show on the face. Once infected, a person can lead a normal life for 10-15 years before progressing to AIDS if they arent taking their drugs and if they detect it early and start taking their drugs faithfully, they can lead a normal life till they die without getting the dangerous immuno deficiency syndrome AIDS and they can also have unprotected sex without passing the virus to others. They can equally breast feed freely without passing the virus to their babies as far as they are not skipping their drugs for even a day.
This is possible because the drugs that fight the virus completely keep the viral load in the blood at nearly undetectable level while being consistent with your drugs. When you skip your drugs, viral particles hiding in certain body tissues can get back into the blood and you are able to pass them on to others during unprotected sex or breast feeding. This is one of the reasons you shouldnt skip your drugs if you are on drugs for HIV.
