Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with the country accounting for about 20 per cent of global maternal deaths.
The lifetime risk of dying during pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum for a Nigerian woman is 1 in 22, compared to 1 in 4900 in developed countries. Many factors, including inadequate health personnel and facilities, poverty, early marriage, banditry, and insurgency, prevent pregnant women from accessing quality maternal care.
Reversing trends in adverse maternal outcomes in Nigerias rural and urban communities, as well as improving access to better quality maternal care among Nigerian women necessitate a multifaceted approach.
Collective efforts to improve health education, health seeking behaviour and skilled birth attendance can be accomplished. This is what Girl Child Concerns is working on achieving with funding from MSD for Mothers through the VillageHealthWorkers programme to improve maternal health outcomes in Borno State.
Amazingly, the efforts of the Village Health Workers are paying off as they have been able to successfully improve the health seeking behaviour of women in the rural communities towards achieving better hygiene in pregnancy, antenatal care attendance, child spacing, and better nutrition. These have positively impacted their maternal health outcomes.
The inspiring stories of these Village Health Workers are being told in the documentary Improving Access to Maternal Care Through Village Health Workers in Borno State.
This is a must-watch documentary. Check it out here and let us know your thoughts on this impactful intervention httpslnkd.indVWjQp7y
